Vicky Lucille Durnil 70, loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to everyone she knew, passed away at 12:30pm on Friday, January 12, 2018, after a struggle with bladder and liver cancer and diabetes.
Vicky was born in Decatur in May of 1947, to Sarah Elizabeth Bailey. When she was a young girl, her mother married Robert E. McKeown, whom she always considered as her father. She met her future husband, Chris Durnil, as a freshman at Eisenhower High School, and the two began a relationship that lasted over fifty-six years. She graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1965, and married Chris the following year in June of 1966. Their marriage produced three sons: Christopher Todd, Timothy Shawn, and Thomas Robert.
Vicky was a devoted and heavily involved mother, becoming a Den Leader in Scouts and the President of the P.T.A. at Garfield Elementary School. She also held various jobs over the years, including a telephone operator for Bell Telephone, a baker for Cloyd’s Market, a receptionist/secretary for Fuller, Hopp, Barr, McCarthy and Quigg Law office, and the office manager at Catholic Charities, where she retired in 2011 after seventeen years of service. She was also an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Decatur.
Vicky loved to spend time with her friends and family. She still ran around with her childhood friends Janet Ashcraft Byers, Shirley Bundy Elam, and Linda Angle Baxter, a/k/a “The Old Dolls,” whom remained the best of friends for over sixty years. She loved her three bulldogs, Gracie, George, and Cheesy. She also shared great memories with so many others – Vicky was a great friend to so many people.
Vicky also loved old movies, music, trivia, playing cards, Yahtzee, arts and crafts, cooking, and traveling. She loved the music of John Denver, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Andy Williams, and Doris Day. Over the last several years, she and Chris had seen Barbra Streisand, Garth Brooks, Cher, and Bruce Springsteen live in concert. She also loved travelling to the East Coast, the Black Hills of South Dakota, and New Orleans, where her son Tim lives. Her newest, greatest hobby was sharing makeup time with her granddaughter, Roslyn.
