Robert Alvin Whitney 1923-2018

Robert A. Whitney, 94 went peacefully to his savior’s arms on Saturday January 13, 2017 at McKinley Court in Decatur.  Robert was born in Urbana, Illinois to Roy and Clara Whitney.  He moved to Decatur as a child and graduated from Decatur High School and promptly enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1942.  He served actively from February of 1943 until February of 1946 and received the Victory Medal and several ribbons for service.

Robert met and married the love of his life, Lillian Roarick in 1951.  They spent sixty-six years together and had two children, Bruce and Sherry. Robert was an avid stamp collector and loved the Chicago Cubs.  He was extremely happy when they were World Series Champions.  He and his family went on many adventures collecting sea shells.  Robert loved Genealogy and was proud that he had traced his family back to a direct descendant of the Mayflower.  Robert also wrote beautiful poetry and loved sharing it with many people.

Robert worked for twenty plus years at the Illinois Public Aid as a caseworker and was a member of Life Foursquare Church in Decatur, spending many hours teaching Sunday School.

Robert is survived by his wife, Lillian Whitney, son Bruce R. Whitney (Debra), daughter Sherry Zaragoza (Thomas), four Grandchildren : Jeremy Whitney, James Welker, Stephanie Zaragoza, Brad Wall, two step granddaughters: Jennifer Schoonover (Desmond), Katharine Hammon (Kevin) and  eleven great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents Roy and Clara Whitney, Sister Martha Johnson, daughter in law Carolyn Whitney and grandson Justin Whitney.

Graveside Services Celebrating his life will be held on Friday January 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Illini Cemetery in Warrensburg, Illinois.  Pastor Steve Hohm from Life Foursquare will be officiating.

Donations in lieu of flowers should to go Imboden Living Center, Resident Activities Department.
