David Wayne Ellis went home to be with Jesus on June 28, 2022.

Dave was born in December of 1958, in Decatur, Illinois, to David and Nancy Ellis.  He married Brenda Harris in November of 1983, and together they have two children: a daughter, Mary, and a son, Michael. While working at Illinois Power/Dynegy/Ameren for over 35 years, he went back to school at night and earned his associate degree.  He worked for the majority of those years in a job he loved as a substation electronics technician.

Dave always kept himself in shape mentally and physically.  He played baseball growing up and then later played softball on the Foursquare team for many years.  He loved the camaraderie of sports.  He took great joy in playing baseball, basketball, and football in the backyard with his kids while they were growing up.

Dave loved vacationing with his family.  He visited at least 30 states, 10 national parks, 2 oceans, and countless state parks with his family as they camped across the country in their pop-up camper.   He was always up for an adventure, whether it was a helicopter ride over the island of Kauai, jet skiing in the Chesapeake Bay, hiking in Yellowstone, feeding Cheetos to wild burros in South Dakota, or skillfully driving a van while pulling a camper in California.

Dave was a skilled woodworker, designing and building beautiful cabinetry for his family, building a birdhouse with Michael, and even dabbling in set design for Mary’s school drama club.

He loved to laugh.  Anyone who knew him knew that he had a unique, infectious laugh.  He loved watching funny TV shows and would laugh so loud that no one else could hear the TV.  He loved catching up with friends and playing games.  He was a competitive winner but also a gracious loser…he just enjoyed having fun with his family and friends.  He thoroughly enjoyed white elephant gift exchanges and took great care and joy in picking out the perfect gift to dismay the crowd.

Dave loved his family and friends and was always ready to drop everything and help whenever he could.

He loved flowers and gardens, and his multiple peony bushes were his pride and joy.  He was especially delighted in recent years to find a yellow peony to add to his garden.

One of Dave’s greatest joys was fishing with his family, mostly for crappie and striped bass.  He took his family on many fishing trips to Lake Shelbyville, where they had lots of fun trying to out-fish each other.

Dave was generous with his time, talents, and resources, always making sure that the people around him felt valued and safe.

Dave is survived by his wife of 38 years, Brenda; daughter Mary (Zachary) Barnes; son Michael Ellis (Jodi Thomas-Head); mother Nancy Ellis; brother Michael (Terri) Ellis; sister Susan Ellis; brother-in-law Douglas (Rebecca) Harris; mother-in-law Marilyn Harris; 3 nephews; and 2 nieces.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, David L. Ellis and his father-in-law, Wendell B. Harris.

Services to honor and celebrate Dave’s life will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Life Foursquare Church, 2954 Ash Ave., Decatur, IL.  The family will receive friends for a time of visitation two hours before the service.  Interment will be held at North Fork Cemetery, Decatur, Illinois. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service and Care is in charge of the arrangements.

Dave’s family would like to thank the staff at Cancer Care for their care and treatment of Dave, especially Dr. Guaglianone.  They would also like to thank the caring staff of Traditions Health, especially Becky, Amanda, and Susan.

In memoriam donations can be made to New Life Pregnancy Center, the National Park Foundation, or Foursquare Missions International.

Please sign the family guestbook.
