Donald “Don” Richard Garrett, 82 of Decatur passed away at 3:40 pm. Sunday, February 18, 2018 in Fairhaven’s Christian Home surrounded by his family.
Funeral service to celebrate Don’s life will be 11:30 am. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church (2727 North Union, Decatur, Illinois 62526) with Pastor Adam Ray officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:30 also at the church. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or to the Northeast Community Fund. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service and Care is in charge of the arrangements.
Don was born in July of 1935 in Decatur son of William L. and Mabel L. Garrett. He graduated Decatur High School in 1953. He attended Richland Community College and received his Broker’s License in Real Estate. Don worked for A.W. Cash Valve as a Vice President of Sales and retired from the company in Cullman, Alabama, he was a Realtor with Brinkoetters and a Supervisor with ADM. Don was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran and was active on many boards, Lay Ministry, Building Committee, and a volunteer at the LSA Resale Shop. He enjoyed bowling, golf and fishing and working on old cars. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Don married Lois I. Lorton in 1955 and they enjoyed sixty-two years together.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Garrett, children, Diane (Jeff) Maddox of Decatur, Steven (Gail) Garrett of Illiopolis, Illinois, Julie Grace of Gulf Breeze, Florida, grandchildren, Ross (Jessica) Elliott, Hannah Elliott, Stacey Garrett, Jessica Garrett, Justine Grace and Spencer Grace, seven great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Nancy Garrett of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Garrett and son-in-law, Kevin Grace.
The family wishes to thank the Fairhaven’s Christian Home especially the staff at station 4 and also the doctors, nurses and staff of Cancer Care Specialist of Central Illinois.
Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
