Warrensburg, Illinois
David “Wavy” Alan Hughes, 70, of Warrensburg, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was born in February of 1955 in Bloomington, the son of Leland and Eileen Hughes. After graduating from Warrensburg High School, David began his career at Firestone in Decatur, where he worked and served as a dedicated union employee until retiring when the plant closed. He later joined Caterpillar in Decatur, where he brought that same commitment and pride to his work, retiring after more than four decades of hard work.
David had a lifelong passion for cars – especially drag racing and hot rods. He even raced his mid-sixties Chevelle at Motion Speedway near Assumption a few times and he was in the process of turning his 1967 Chevy II into a drag racer. Over the years, he owned a 1961 and a 1963 Corvette, a 1970 ‘Cuda, and most recently, a Redbird Red Chevy Colorado.
David was a loving father and an avid fan of nature, Bigfoot, and Illinois State Athletics. He loved canoeing with friends, camping, and visiting antique sales. As a devoted supporter of Illinois State University football and men’s basketball, he was a long-time season ticket holder who rarely missed a game. He followed the Redbirds to Florida, Hawaii, and beyond.
He is survived by his daughter, Kara, and her husband, Darren Spain, of Chicago; and his brothers, Dennis (Betty) Hughes of Decatur and Larry (Rella) Hughes of Columbus, Indiana. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
David was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first grandchild, expected in early 2026, and his family takes comfort in knowing he will always be part of that child’s story.
A family-led celebration of David’s life will be held Friday, November 14, 2025 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the FourNine in Mt. Zion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Illinois State University Athletics in memory of David, whose love for the Redbirds was lifelong. Donations can be made online at https://giving.illinoisstate.edu/opportunities/redbird-athletics/. Tanzyus Logan Funeral Service and Care is assisting the family with arrangements.
