Gilbert "Gil" Frank Baumann Obituary (1963 - 2021)

Gilbert “Gil” Frank Baumann, age 79, of Decatur, IL, passed away on August 21, 2021, after a valiant fight against cancer. Gil was born in April 1942 to Austrian immigrants Gilbert and Ann Baumann in Chicago. After graduating from Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, he went on to graduate with a degree in marketing at SIUC. Gil married Carole Jean Stone, whom he’d known since junior high school, in September of 1963. He and Carole raised three children, Michael, Laura, and Steven. They moved from St. Louis to Decatur in 1974 and have lived in the same home ever since. Work was important to Gil, both as a salesman and a handyman. He was reliable and always did everything to the best of his ability. Gil was also an avid outdoorsman, and he took frequent fishing and hunting trips. Later in life, Gil became involved in the community at First Christian Church. There he made wonderful friends and influenced many lives. Gil also volunteered as a youth mentor and a small group Bible study leader. Gil was a strong and faithful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Carole; his sisters Carol (Alan) Landholt and Linda (Stuart) Mogren; his children Michael (Mindy), Laura (Lon) Monk, and Steve (Marci); and his grandchildren David, Jack, Jenny, Katharine, John, and Lon; and many nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Gil’s Life will be held at 6:00pm Friday, August 27th at First Christian Church. There will be no visitation due to recent COVID surges. The family respectfully asks that masks be worn. Memorials can be made to First Christian Church’s Club 305 ministry.
