Richards

Kent "Peanut" Richards, 69, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026, surrounded by his children and under the loving care of Hands of God Hospice at The Glenwood Supportive Living of Mt. Zion, IL.

A gathering with family and friends to celebrate Kent’s life will be held at 3-5 pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Tanzyus Logan Funeral Service and Care (2442 North Route 121 Decatur, Illinois 62526). Family request casual attire. Tanzyus Logan Funeral Service and Care is in charge of the arrangements.

Kent was born on June 1, 1957. To those who knew him best, he was simply known as “Peanut”— a name that became just as much a part of him as his unforgettable sense of humor and his ability to make anyone around him laugh.

Kent found joy in the outdoors and was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, rarely missing a chance to watch a game. But if anything came close to rivaling the Chicago Cubs, it was watching his own kids play. Whether on the sideline of a St. Teresa football game or standing in a dugout, Kent loved coaching and cheering his children through their athletic careers, and there was nowhere else he'd rather have been. His sense of humor was unmatched, and he had a special gift for bringing laughter wherever he went. Always ready with a handshake, a smile and a hug, he had a way of making the people around him feel loved simply by being himself.

Kent was a beloved father to Joseph (Megan) Richards, Hannah (Lucas) Reynolds, and Justin Richards. He was a cherished grandfather to Charlotte and Palmer, who brought immeasurable joy to his life, and a beloved "grand-dog" dad to Gracie, Gunner, and Ace.

“Peanut” leaves behind a lifetime of laughter, love, and stories that will continue to be told by everyone who was lucky enough to know him. His humor, his warmth, and the joy he brought into every room will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Kent's doctors, nurses, caregivers, and support staff at Cancer Care of Decatur, Decatur and Springfield Memorial Hospital, The Glenwood Supportive Living of Mt. Zion, and Hands of God Hospice. These remarkable people became part of Kent's story — not just for the care they gave, but for the kindness, compassion, and friendship they brought into his final days. Their love for him will never be forgotten, and our family is forever grateful.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Joanne Richards, and his brother, Kevin Richards.
