Mary Lou Gardner, age 72, of Decatur passed away peacefully with her family at her side on September 4, 2017. Mary Lou was born in Taylorville, Illinois in February of 1945 to Paul and Mary Freehill. She married her beloved husband, Lynn S. Gardner, in July of 1985 in Decatur and he survives. She is also survived by her grandsons Aaron Templeton and Parker Templeton of Decatur, her sisters Paula Hall of Springfield, Lalie Welch of Costa Rica, and Anita Kale (John) of Brimfield, Illinois. She also leaves behind several deeply-loved nieces and nephews, many cherished paternal and maternal cousins and a host of wonderful friends. Mary Lou retired from AT&T in 2005, went back to work and then retired again in 2016 as the secretary for Trinity Lutheran Church in Decatur. Mary Lou loved traveling with her husband, making memories with her fun and interesting family, laughing with her grandsons, spending time with precious friends, and dirty martinis. Some days the dirty martinis ranked first.\nVisitation will be 5 to 8 pm Thursday, September 7, at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Decatur; with the funeral Mass at 10:00 am Friday, with Father Nick Husain officiating. Inurnment will be 2:00 pm. Friday in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to an Education Fund set up for Aaron and Parker Templeton at Staley Credit Union, 3330 North Woodford Street Decatur, Illinois 62526.
