Mellie Laverne Young, 88 of Decatur passed on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 5:10 am at Fairhaven Nursing Home.

A funeral service to celebrate Mellie’s life will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Salem Baptist Church (2650 S. Taylorville Rd. Decatur, Illinois 62521). Pastor Derek Bradshaw will be officiating. A visitation with family and friends will be held an hour prior to the service at the church as well. Burial at Macon County Memorial Park (5700 W. Main St. Decatur, Illinois 62522). Memorials can be made out to the charity of donor’s choice. Tanzyus Logan Funeral Service and Care is in charge of the arrangements.

Mellie was born in June of 1938, in Bonnie, Illinois daughter of William and Effie Owings. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1957 and worked for Decatur Memorial Hospital’s accounting department. Mellie married Billy Young in November of 1962, who preceded her in July of 2021. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survived by her sister Maidie Leslie of Decatur, sons; Terry (Cyndi) of Boody, and Randy (Julie) of Decatur, grandsons; Collin Young of Decatur, and Drake Young of Decatur, and granddaughter Hannah Young of Decatur.

Preceded in death by her husband, Bill Young, parents William and Effie Owings, and siblings; sisters Exie, Mary, Lova, and Vera, and brother Cecil.
