Valeria Ann Stringer, age 94, of Decatur, passed away at her home on Monday, November 26, 2018, with her son at her side.
Ann was born in Latham, Illinois, in June of 1924, the daughter of George R. and Esther E. Waddell. She graduated from Latham High School in 1942, and attended Illinois State Normal University where she met Charles S. Stringer of Lincoln. They were married in October of 1944 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and remained there for the duration of World War II. They later lived in Ames, Iowa, where Ann worked while Charles finished his education. She was one of the generation of women who said they got their “PHT degrees” by Putting Hubby Through. They lived for a few years in Peoria before moving to Decatur in 1957.
Ann was an active community volunteer, helping at Mound and Parsons schools as room mother, Brownie leader, and PTA president; with Decatur Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in the flower workshop and gift shop, doing much of the shop’s buying for several years; and as a member of First Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in Women’s Fellowship. She was a member of the Sunnycrest Unit of Home Extension for over 50 years, and a Democratic election judge for at least thirty years. She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for herself since her teens.
She is survived by her children, Stephen C. Stringer of Decatur and Cheryl A. (Mark) Pence of Springfield; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stanley and Dorothy Stringer of Falls Church, VA; six nieces and one nephew; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 2014; an infant daughter, Sharon; her sister and brother-in-law, Billy Jo and Donald Cooper; and her parents.
Services will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at First Congregational Church in Decatur, with visitation from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and memorial service following at 12:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, 3465 N.
