William Thomas Fleming Sr 1933-2022

On December 19, 2022, William T. Fleming Sr. went home to be with the Lord, at the age of 89 in Sylva, North Carolina.

He was born in May of 1933 in Decatur, IL to Beryl Lloyd and Erline Elizabeth Fleming. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1951 and went on to attend the University of Illinois for one and a half years in the agricultural Program. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953 and was stationed in Greenville, South Carolina. He served in the Air Force until 1957 and U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1963-1966. During his time in the Air Force, he met and married Blanche Kathleen Schmitt in July of 1956, in St Louis, Missouri. They moved Harristown, Illinois in March of 1957 where he lived until September of 2016. He was married for 56 years to his wife until her death in 2012. He worked for Lyons Auto Supply in Decatur, Illinois from 1958 to 2001 as a salesman and later became a partner. After the stores were sold, he went to work for the YMCA in Decatur as a driver, worker in the after-school program and later worked in the office until he retired in June of 2016 for health reasons. He also served as a trustee for the Harristown Township. Bill came to trust Jesus as his Savior in January of 1976. He then became a faithful member of Salem Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee, and bus captain until 2016. He moved to Sylva, North Carolina for health reasons and served at Victory Baptist Church in the van ministry.

He is preceded in death by his parents Beryl Lloyd and Erline Elizabeth Fleming, wife Blanche Fleming, brothers James Fleming and Michael Fleming, sisters Elizabeth King and Trudy Owens.

He is survived by one brother, Kevin Fleming, one sister-in-law, Carolyn Fleming, daughters Kim L. (Fleming) Welch and her husband Jeff, Kathleen L. (Fleming) Newman and her husband Pat, sons William T. Fleming Jr. and wife Lauren, and Mark A. Fleming and wife Lisa. He has 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Salem Baptist Church, 2650 S. Taylorville Road, Decatur, Illinois, 62521 on January 5, 2023. The Viewing will be from 5 to 7 pm with the service following. The graveside service with Military Honors will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Riverton, Illinois on January 6, 2023, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Salem Baptist Church bus ministry or to Victory Baptist Church in Sylva, North Carolina to the van ministry.
